Kansas Range Youth Camp: Free Tuition Offered!

The Kansas Section of the Society for Range Management will once again be sponsoring the Kansas Range Youth Camp in 2022. This camp has been held for over 50 years. The purpose of the camp is to give students a basic understanding of what rangeland is, the components of rangeland ecosystems, and sustainable management of those systems. Students selected to participate should have a serious interest in rangeland management, rangeland ecology, or grazing animals.

The camp is held at Camp Mennoscah in Kingman County.  Registration is limited to students who will begin their sophomore, junior, or senior year of high school in the fall of 2022.  Any student that is interested in livestock, wildlife management, soils, native plants, or natural resources is sure to learn something interesting and have a fun time doing it.  There is a lot of time spent outdoors doing ‘hands-on’ activities, and several field trips will allow students to see firsthand some local operations.  The Kansas Range Youth Camp offers participants a learning opportunity in range plant identification, plant growth, stocking rate determinations, livestock nutrition, rangeland wildlife management, and more.  Other activities include swimming, canoeing, fishing, hiking, and a steak dinner.

Tuition for the camp is $250. The Dickinson County Conservation District offers sponsorships to Dickinson County students to attend the Kansas Range Youth Camp. To be eligible for the sponsorship, participants must reside within Dickinson County, be an upcoming sophomore, junior, or senior (2022-2023 school year), and be available to attend the camp from June 14th through 17th, 2022.

If you are interested in attending the Kansas Range Youth Camp and would like to be considered for sponsorship, please contact Cindy Montgomery at the Dickinson County Conservation District by Friday, May 6, 2022. The Youth Registration form and additional information is available for download here or in person at the USDA Service Center in Abilene.
